Painting Process | The Closers

Kicks

After an inspiring day at The MOMA with @pwryan, I decided to create a triptych on 4′X4′ canvases (canvi?). The series, nearly completed, is titled, “Stuff I Like On Canvas With Paint, Wire and Other Stuff”. Eloquent. Let’s go to the tape for a blow-by-blow pictorial of “The Closers”, featuring my retired size 10 gold Adidas.

I usually have earlier photographs, but I was too focused on splashdown.

Painting with fellow artists is always inspiring, and with Paul working away, it felt like a Bohemian slumber party with a 99% chance of creativity.

With a nice yellow base, I decided I wanted to get in there with black and white to create a contrasting plane prior to applying the final wash. You will also notice, the shoes are now wired to the canvas.

And here comes the grey, muddying the waters ever so slightly.

I had a strong desire to immortalize these gold shoes. Walking home from work in the Diamond District, I spotted these bad boys in a storefront window and declared – I am going to buy these and start closing deals. Two jobs and 100′s of city miles later, they are now canvas-bound.

A detail, focusing in on “Biz” – in honor of a soldier.

Wearing a white derby is extremely important.

The fake shoe, next to the real shoe.

RIP complementing the Biz.

TwoofThree

Two of Three, a final to follow shortly.

And the final piece.
