Inspired by a Woody Allen flick, pondering art and time… at 6:32 PM, EST, on Sunday August 9th, 2009 – I issued an open art challenge. The mission: make any piece of art with the objective of selling the final piece – a goal, I believe, Andy Warhol would have appreciated.
I didn’t expect anyone to join me, especially without notice. Shocked and inspired, I received work from five artists – all of which heard about this challenge solely through Twitter and Facebook.

Thank you artists Tony Black, Paul Ryan, Pat Gallagher, Vanessa Rubio and Ari Lankin. In the order received: exciting, spontaneous, emotional and exciting artwork after the jump.
*Update* Artist Ryan Seslow has contributed his piece – check it out after the jump.
*Update 2* Artist Miguel Pinto has contributed his work – check it out after the jump.

Title: “i’m actually keeping a journal because of you” | Size: 15 3/4″x19 1/2″ | Medium: acrylic, crayon and gesso on canvas paper

Signed, sealed and delivered.

A close-up of the final.

Entire work, in context.

From artist Tony Black, about this work: “- music, Stan Getz – tv (muted) Yanks/Sox – this work was a result of quite a few ingredients… a break-up (not today), a bike ride (today), a glass or two of Italian red wine(while painting) and of course a journal entry (this morning)… hence the title ‘i’m actually keeping a journal because of you’.”
Title: “Warhol on Warhol” | Size: 9″X12″ | Medium: ink on paper

From artist Paul Ryan, “I thought of this as a piece about Warhol looking at a Chuck Close style piece on him. Reminds me a lot of some of the photos we’ve taken at the Met. I am not at home tonight so I had limited use of art supplies but luckily I had my sketch pad with me and some markers.”

Evidence! Paul Ryan and a beautiful woman at The MET.
12:02 AM | Pat Gallagher
Title: “dark ass days”

Final Piece.

Process.

Process. From artist Pat Gallagher, “Took about an hour and 30. To me it’s a person struggling though life..fighting against the current…”
Title: “Hearts”

Final work.

Process.

Process. From artist Vanessa Rubio, “…I didn’t know what image was going to come out, I thought about relationships, and a subway drawing I made a while ago – so I combined the two and out came this. I admit, I didn’t quite focus on my inner Andy, because really screw Andy, I’m more interested myself.”
Title: “Peering into the raw exterior of Jack White.” | Size: Diptych, 2X8″X10″ | Medium: oil on canvas and oil, acrylic and collage on canvas

Both pieces together.

Piece 1.

Piece 2. From artist Ari Lankin, “Guess who? Both are 8×10, the first is oil on canvas. The second is oil, acrylic and collage on canvas. Peering into the raw exterior of Jack White.”
11:58 AM | Ryan Seslow
Title: “Untitled” | Size: 15 3/4″x19 1/2″ | Medium: Screenprint, Paint, Collage

Final.

In Context. From artist Ryan Seslow, “Warhol has always been an inspiration to my work. Since discovering Warhol as a lad, I have incorporated screen printing into my works; usually collaging the prints into existing paintings or using some form of construction.”

@Vanessa and Tony: Awesome, thank you for putting together a great effort – it’s fascinating to see how many visions can originate from one point.
