Broken Leg Collage Number One

Broken Leg Collage Number One

There I was, a few ticks after midnight, skating into the corner for the puck at Chelsea Piers on Friday, when I collided with another player, hit the boards and snapped my fibula.

The result? Six weeks off of my feet, with a small potential of going under the knife. While this means my location painting must take a hiatus, I will take this opportunity to focus and create. Above, you will see the first collage of my injury, many to follow. After the jump, a few snaps (har, har) along the way.

Broken Leg Collage Number One

Beginning on an 8.5X11 in piece of Bristol paper with photocopies of my fracture from two angles. The printouts were applied with Matte Gel Medium and a brush.

To help colorize the paper and dry the collage elements, I burned out matches along the surface of the paper – affixing them with globs of paint, straight from the tube.

Matches, matches everywhere. If this was a website, it would not, however, be called match.com.

Mixing in some orange, and breaking the picture plane in two.

Globs of dark to create some visual balance, and weight to the ground beneath my broken leg.

Final

Giving the paint some movement, the collage is complete. I tried to do this with too much thought, I wanted to just experience the collage and focus on the materials vs. the message.
