Urbania Profile | Photographer Greg McMahon

Greg McMahon

Born and raised on Long Island , Greg’s photographic and image making skills manifested themselves while taking video classes in High School under the guidance of Marianne Taylor Smith.

A relative late-comer to the world of photography, it wasn’t until the Winter of 1998 that Greg owned his first 35mm SLR camera. Utilizing video skills that he had learned, he quickly transferred his knowledge of framing, composition and exposure to his photography while at Emerson College in Boston. While there, he devoted himself to his new craft and passion under the tutelage of Lauren Shaw and eventually minored in Photography.

In 2005, Greg started shooting predominately in 6×6 Square Medium Format. Utilizing the larger frame, the freedom of the square image helped hone his vision even further. Like any adaptive photographer, he embraced change and in 2008 started to shoot in the digital format. Today, he utilizes the film/digital hybrid technique, and shoots in whatever format the subject calls for and lends itself to, including 35mm, Medium Format and Digital. Still loving film as a medium and what it offers compared to digital, some of his favorite films (discontinued unfortunately) are Kodachrome 25, Kodak Technical Pan, and Agfa’s APX series.

A fan and supporter of Camera Original, Greg captures his images within the camera, with as little to no post processing as possible. His subjects vary from musicians, to texture and patterns, to nature and cityscapes, to alternative processes and Polaroids.

Today, Greg works in NYC’s Film and Television industry as a camera assistant further enhancing and learning his craft of image making with lights, lenses, cameras and film. A frequent Borbay collaborator, Greg will be the official event photographer for Urbania. For projects and collaborations, you can reach Greg here.
