Borbay Collage Painting

After the incredible Urbania ride, words cannot describe how much I enjoyed getting back to painting. I began painting this prior to my collage painting portrait, but it sat idle, unfinished. With time, it has undergone an interesting journey – there was some darkness and this 18″X24″ canvas was the recipient.

Borbay Collage Painting

The start mirrored the others in this series – a mass of words forming a tetris-like geometrical shape.

An early introduction of some key characters, Marilyn Monroe, Nixon, Nate from the dreadful Knicks; catch the Christmas tree in the background.

Some classical paintings joining the mix, Frida minus the unibrow; a nice piece of Edward Hopper real estate.

Here comes the splashes of yellow, and crude line drawing.

Working the second primary color, red, around the canvas.

Blues and orange, beginning to define the space and shape – this is where I left the canvas for nearly a month.

A vision of green was calling me, so it was added, but once I put it down – I couldn’t stop.

Borbay Collage Painting

Mixing combinations of complementary colors, similar to the Woolworth Painting, I began the process of painting everything out.

Borbay Collage Painting

And complete. The first dark collage painting in the series. There is something quite enjoyable about reducing a picture to darkness.

Hi Marty! I use Liquitex Gel Medium (Matte Finish) to affix the newspaper to the canvas. I lay down a moderate layer of the medium, affix the paper, then apply another layer firmly with the brush. As a precautionary measure, I used to press on the slick paper with my finger to smooth out bumps, but I am now getting better at applying with the brush only. This, of course, makes for slightly cleaner hands. Please feel free to email me if you have any more questions. jason@borbay.com | Thank you for stopping by.
