This style of collage painting lends itself to interesting visual challenges. It is important to organize a certain level of chaos beneath a rather straight forward composition and subject matter. In the case of Palm Bay, I wanted the name and brand mark to emerge from the background, while simultaneously being recessed from the surface. After the jump, each stroke along the way.
Beginning with the standard under-drawing and infrared identification layer.
Beginning to collage in a geometrical pattern.
Nearly a completely covered surface, with random headlines from the New York Post.
A quick drawing of the Palm Bay logo and mark.
Beginning to work int he paint, starting with a deep burnt umber… a departure from the standard bright red.
Yellow then blue, completing the first primary triad…
This painting was different, in that I set out to leave the basic surface of the letters P-A-L-M-B-A-Y untouched.
Working (mostly) saturated colors around the picture plane, with the exception of a slightly minted green.
With a round of pinks and oranges, this one began to take on a life of its own and steered itself into a pastel corner.
Bringing in the truly light blue.
The picture continues to become softer and softer, as I begin to add rich colors into the globe.
An unusual result after several hours of night painting…
Refining the mark and the logo…. with darks, and beginning to focus my attention on the tonality of the background.
Grey’s layering the background, shifting the viewers focal points.
And completed… a clean, primarily white background with raw, aggressive colors directly beneath the surface.
