Here is the sneak peak of my latest painting in progress, a 3′X5′ map of the United States. It is a painting closely modeled after one of my favorite all time pictures: Jasper John’s Map.
Picasso said, “Bad artists copy. Great artists steal.” I consider my map to be on the larcenous side of the curve; but, only time, critical review and the willingness of a collector to open their checkbook will determine the truth – which is largely out of my hands. Some thought this was a copy, but, considering the differences in size, medium and authored changes, it is in fact my own.
The question is this: How do you feel about using a master work as the basis for a new piece? Is it stealing, or is this part of the process?
