Two years ago, Howard Krulewitz launched the Hakker Short Film Festival. During the first edition, I was a bit actor in Taunt’s Hard on Ice, the eventual festival winner. This year, I teamed up with Greg McMahon and Nick Mahoney to take home the title, with the aptly titled: New York Post. The Hakker Short Film Festival donates half its proceeds to the winning film maker, and the other half to an excellent charity — The Jack Krulewitz Ice Cream in My Mustache fund; with all proceeds going directly to cancer research.
Following two successful festivals, HSFF President Howard Krulewitz commissioned a painting showcasing the festival.
Knowing this painting was all about the logo… I wanted it to be heavy on the headlines.
The top left clip, “Mecca” was ripped from the cover page of the newspaper used in our movie, the New York Post.
With the entire surface covered, I began to create a stencil of the Hakker Short Film Festival to capture a direct likeness.
Logo added, I begin painting around the logo, with a nice hard set of reds.
Red, yellow, blue, orange, purple… working around and across the color wheel. Some of these headlines, “Son’s” “Good ol’ Boys” “Made in NY”… intentional.
As soon as the dark tones begin to materialize, the feel of the canvas rapidly shifts.
Red, black and blue… a strange combination. There was a set of red, blue, black and white Vaughn goalie pads from my childhood I always found to be strange.
All of the dark tones are made from complements, red and green, yellow and purple, etc. This creates a richer feel than black from the tube, at least, I have found this to be true.
Quite dark, you can feel the green and red tones. The logo was initially going to be white, but after some further thought, gold made more sense.
And the final! Don’t miss the 2011 Hakker Short Film Festival… it’s open to everyone, the money goes to great causes, and it is a damn fine event.
