2010 Borbay’s Year in Review on Canvas General Action | (3)
2010 kicked-off with a new title — Time Out New York's Most Creative New Yorker... and a broken fibula. By the end of my first full calendar year as a professional artist, I hung in two exhibitions, got back on the ice, painted furiously and most importantly — got engaged to the woman of my dreams. As you can see, my clean cut advertising image changed greatly per my portrait above. I have no resolutions for 2011, other than to keep pressing forward. 2009 was great, 2010 was incredible, 2011... Working your way through portrait defining headlines can be a daunting task. For this to-be-painted Jay Z, I sifted through 20 New York Posts looking for the right words... direct and abstract. After posting last nights blog and this picture on Twitter, fellow artist and self-described G-E-N-I-U-S William Powhida had the following comments: "terrible" "vapid" "promo" "self-promo"... and on to the critique: "aggressive" "ad". Jay Z: Changing your name for art, while giving your former/current self a shout? Yes. Saying, "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one" is about a drug-sniffing police dog; then writing, "haters, haters, these niggas is haters!" and having lunch with the first African American President? Check. Cranking out albums that come on like crack, drop trend like heroin and come roaring back as coke in 2008? True. That's Jay Z. And I do believe I will paint his portrait. It's gotten to the point where the Minnesotans in my life, insist I bring snow to Minneapolis. Now, if you know anything about the climate in Minnesota, this is quite the powerful statement. Well, true to form, we arrived Friday for the Arbit wedding, and no sooner did we put our bags down, did the snow begin to fall. Sure enough, snow wasn't the only thing to fall.
