It began in 2009… my first Guggenheim painting. Then in 2010, I decided to do it again… same location and canvas size… after #2, I decided to paint The Guggenheim every June for 20 years. Beyond being one of my favorite places in the city, this will allow me to see my style progression in a consistent way. After the jump, process shots of The Guggenheim #3.

Throw down that quick sketch… the familiar feel of the Gugg.
Oh, oh, oh, Sharpie, how I have missed you.
Going in with the headlines, letting it flow… a mix of intent and intents cousin, happenstance.
Cue the Grape Ape.
Going right to the complements… yellow, purple, then the signature red.
Quickly coming into focus… very raw…
Oh, that blue is about the color of the suit I am getting married in.
I wanted to capture the visual flow of the building without being literal. Literally.
Greens… the smattering of trees along 5th Avenue flattened-out and processed.
Feeling cohesive… at this point, it’s about fine tuning.
The darker tones, deactivating portions of the canvas, activating others.
Around this stage, “I’ll have what he’s having” was a frequent comment.
Splashing a vibrant yellow and solidifying the whites.
And Guggenheim #3 is complete.
