Andy Warhol used to paint with a record spinning, TV on and Magazines open to eliminate all sense of intent... painting a soda bottle in a way that represented a soda bottle. Jackson Pollock would chain smoke and drip paint in a trans-like state, channeling his emotional current through flicks of the wrist.
When I paint locations,I try and let the scene speak to me. After several "rain delayed" days on my most recent bridge picture, I decided to take the Warhol approach and paint, letting the picture happen with minimal conscious control.
