Borbay Video Portrait by Allan Gange Collaboration, Featured Artist | Comments
While painting the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign, Allan Gange began taping Ari Lankin and yours truly for a video project. In the following weeks, Allan and I stayed in touch. While painting on day two of the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign adventure, Allan Gange stopped by to film Ari Lankin and yours truly. He was cool, asked if we minded, we didn't, so we exchanged cards and that was that. Now, we have the result, and it is beautiful... check it out. The Luxor, Las Vegas, shoots a light beam into space. Space. Taking this, and the fact that we stayed there into consideration, I decided to end the trip with a Luxor painting. Having completed two intensive night paintings to date (The Woolworth and Citi Field — below), I realized it would be a true challenge within the time frame. The Woolworth from 7WTC. Citi Field. The Sahara hotel, slated to close forever next week, was the first location I was asked to leave. Anywhere. In the world. Despite the bike security guard being mad cool, I was shocked when we were forced out. I was offered a meeting with their marketing director... but when I went inside to meet with him, he was nowhere to be found. Classy. Nine days in Vegas was the case that they gave me. Actually, it's the trip I booked online. Painting number two was to be a true Las Vegas experience. The El Cortez Hotel on Fremont Street — the uncovered portion (important detail). We wanted to experience the Vegas you see in the movies... from the books. Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada! For years, this sign has been on my painting hit list. Finally, on an absurdly hot and windy pair of April Days in Vegas — it went down, and it was weird. Somehow I was able to snap this picture with nobody in front of the sign — a rarity. Particularly on our first day of smok painting went down on 4/20/2011. Holla Gilbert!
